Brass Durga Mata Mahishasura Mardini Idol

According to popular belief, Mysuru was named after Mahishasuramardini, a manifestation of Goddess Durga. Mahishasura is a Sanskrit word made up of mahisha, which means buffalo, and asura, which means demon, or "buffalo demon." As an Asura, Mahishasura waged war on the Devas, as the Devas and Asuras were constantly at odds. Mahishasura had obtained the boon that no one could ever kill him. In the fights between the gods and the demons, Mahishasura defeated the Devas led by Indra.
