This statue depicts Dwara-devi, the heavenly doorkeeper who guards the temple doors. Temples, like their presiding deity or deities, were embellished with dependent figures, mostly from the same spiritual mythology, known in the tradition as gandharvas, yakshas, kinnaras, apsaras, and so on. As these semi-divinities participated on gods in the Indraloka, their presence in a temple known as devalaya, or the abode of god, was equally important.
