One of Vishnu's 10 incarnations or avatars, Matsya the fish, was frequently depicted in Kalighat paintings. In this picture, Vishnu is seen as Matsya the fish, his original avatar. In order to save humanity and the ancient books from a massive flood, Vishnu assumed the shape of a fish. Matsya slew the conch demon as part of the mission, and when he blows into the conch shell, the earth's equilibrium is restored. The painting is in excellent condition and size is 28"x20" and it comes without a frame.
