This is a Mughal painting of Mumtaz mahal with a rose. Nur Jahan, a thirty-four-year-old Persian noblewoman and the widow of a dissident officer, became the twentieth and favourite wife of Emperor Jahangir, who governed the huge Mughal Empire. She was an intelligent politician as well as a loving companion; imperial orders were issued in her honour, and coins of the realm carried her name. When a rebellious nobleman imprisoned Jahangir, the Empress led troops into combat and eventually rescued him. Nur was the only woman in her male-dominated world to achieve the status of empress. She was also a great clothing designer and ingenious architect whose work inspired her stepson's Taj Mahal.
