Thangkas are illustrated holy scrolls that are the pinnacle of Tibetan Buddhist art. Traditional thangkas were often hand painted with mineral colours and gold dust and they were also stitched or appliqued. They're found in monasteries and households and they're not just for decoration they're highly respected sacred objects. The art form began in Nepal in the 7th century and has since evolved into various painting schools.
